I usually don’t write much about Black Friday “deals” as it usually involves a lot of stuff most people don’t need anyway, but this year it caught my attention that Target is selling their gift cards at 10% off face value. Here are details according to their Black Friday ad [pdf] hosted by Fatwallet.
- 10% Off all Target GiftCards valid in stores on Friday, 11/28/14 from 6am until 12pm Noon local time and at Target.com from 6am until 12pm Noon Central time.
- Target Gift cards purchased during this offer can only be used beginning Saturday, November 29th (no double-dipping on Black Friday).
- Offer valid for up to $300 in Target Giftcard purchases per household. (Not sure how they’d enforce the per-household rule in-store, perhaps by billing address online.)
- Quantities limited, no rainchecks.
The good news is that you can buy online, but the max discount is $30 on $300 of gift cards (less if you’d otherwise use Target RedCard with 5% off). Also, what is up with “quantities limited”? Why limit access to their own gift cards when they already restrict the time to purchase and place a cap on purchases? Hopefully they make this promo run smoothly.
As reader Helena points out, you can also use your Discover It card and get an additional 5% off if you buy the gift cards online at Target.com.

Can you use the redcard to purchase the gift cards?
The 5% Redcard discount does not apply to Target gift cards.

So basically, if used for personal use, it will only amount to a 5% discount for REDcard users. But I suppose you could eke out an extra 2% discount by purchasing the gift cards with a Citi Double Cash Card.
You can use gift cards online and still get your redcard 5% off without putting a dime on the red card.
If I use my Discovery or Chase Freedom card and purchase the cards online, does that mean I get an additional 5% back through the quarterly bonus cash back program for each card?

However, Chase Freedom = No, Target is not included Q4 2014.

How do you know that Discover at Target.com gives 5%:

Isn’t Target a classical discount store?
Target.com is specifically included under their Online Shopping 5% category. Target brick and mortar is not a Department Store. Both Online Shopping and Department Stores get 5% for 4th Quarter 2014

Does anyone know if Wells Fargo Visa Credit Card 5% bonus rewards on gas/groceries/drugstore would apply to a $270 purchase of Target Gift Card in store?
Just trying to decide whether it is worth it to go to Target in person tomorrow to get an extra $13.50 in WF Rewards, obviously not worth it if I only get the same 1% in store that I’d get if I buy the gift card online.
